IRISH GREYHOUND INJURIES
A partial list compiled from IGW (Irish Greyhound Weekly) and SP (Sporting Press)

GA Comment: Please take the time to read through the list as it provides a valuable window into the world of greyhound racing. In addition to the list of injuries
several entries expose the close connection between the English and Irish dog racing industries and others expose the use of drugs to dope dogs.

Finally you might like to consider the fate of these dogs ... how many retired to a loving home and how many disappeared or were killed after their racing careers ended. Click here to see a few case histories of what happens to dogs when they "retire"

Comment… “Larkin About was sore all over after his race. But I would hope to have him right for Saturday,” Paul Hennessy. IGW, 22nd August 2002.

Comment… princes big litters,’ Leonard Lowndes suffered the low point of his ownership career when Swords Prince sustained his career ending injury but now he is living in anticipation of his super dog throwing another one like himself’. www.igb.ie 19th Jan 10

Comment… Word has reached us of an unfortunate injury that has threatened the career of the hugely promising Cornamadaddy Flash. The November ’07 son of He Said So and Clonteen Tornado broke a hock in a trial during the week and so misses tomorrow’s first round heats of the John J Casey Open 575 at Shelbourne. Exceptional Lee sustained a badly broken hock and the likelihood is that he has run his last race. He had been in fine form of late and appeared to be improving with each outing. www.igb.ie 15th jan 10

Comment… But Jeannette was quick to pass on her gratitude to those who helped her with the 83 lb dog afterwards. “Can you please pass on my thanks to the track staff at Shelbourne for their kindness and compassion. I am really grateful to Derek for bringing the buggy out on the track to get my ‘Bobby’ to the vet room without causing him any more pain than he had already, sustaining a severely broken hock and with 83 lb he was too heavy for me to carry all the way. It was gut wrenching to see my dog break down when in a winning position, compounded by the bitter disappointment of being denied my first double at Shelbourne on a Saturday night. www.igb.ie 9th nov 2009
