Learning Without Killing

By Andrew Knight

Starting with my own veterinary course, in the last several years I’ve been involved in several successful campaigns at universities around the world, in which collectively hundreds of dissection or animal experimentation labs have been replaced with humane alternatives. All of these campaigns have been run by highly motivated students, demonstrating the great power students have to achieve positive change. In 2004 I created www.LearningWithoutKilling.info to give students easy access to the resources they most need to maximize their chances of success.

Included are my book Learning Without Killing: A Guide to Conscientious Objection and other useful high-quality conscientious objection resources, including examples of comprehensive alternatives submissions that students can download, modify with minimal time and effort, and resubmit to their own universities in support of their requests for alternatives. Such submissions have been core elements of several of the successful campaigns I've been involved in, and have saved hundreds of lives annually. Also provided are the largest high quality photo gallery of harmful animal use and humane alternatives in existence, for use in illustrating educational campaign materials; the largest existing list of free internet-based alternatives; the largest existing lists of relevant scientific and educational studies, sorted by discipline; links to other humane education web sites, alternatives databases, and humane education email lists; and memorial stories submitted by students wishing to honor the animals they’ve seen harmed or killed in their courses.

Based on courses offered, there are around 70 university campuses in Australia where animals are likely to be used in teaching. In order to reach, inspire and guide students taking those courses to campaign for humane alternatives to harmful animal use, I’d like to advertise www.LearningWithoutKilling.info widely, via articles and advertisements in campus magazines, and recruitment of students or local groups to place leaflets (downloadable from the site) on noticeboards in animal using faculties.
