The only greyhound track in Vietnam, which closed for eight months

Like other south east asian countries, Vietnam is expanding it's
greyhound racing industry with support and encouragement from
the rest of the greyhound world. The Australian industry is particularly
prominent in this expansion as many of the greyhounds are exported
from there.
The Peoples
Committee have also granted INDO CHINA RACING AND ENTERTAINMENT
(Mr Nguyen Ngoc My, Chairman) a 30 year license for the development
of greyhound racing in CAMBODIA . A racing facility has already
been identified in Phomn Phenn.
In Vietnam
and Cambodia, as in other S.E Asian countries, there is no opportunity
or hope of rehoming the dogs that have become surplus to requirements,
therefore they often end up being slaughtered in the barbaric
dog meat industry.
With
only one racecourse in Vung Tau, greyhound racing has not thrived
in the country. This is what Mr Ronald
A. Sultemeier, Chairman of the World Greyhound Racing Federation,
said about the industry in Vietnam at the federations annual
meeting held in Vung Tau recently.
Greyhound
racing is a popular sport which is very competitive, but in Vietnam
the sport fails to prove that it is a competitive one
Mr
Sultemeier recommended that in order to promote the development
of the industry, Vietnam needed to make the most of its strength
in exporting greyhounds to other countries.
Currently
in the world there is not a greyhound breeding and training centre
which is as large as the one in Vung Tau of Vietnam. Therefore,
promoting greyhound breeding and training for export is what Vietnam
needs to focus on. The prices of Vietnamese greyhounds will be
very competitive as the labour and other production costs in Vietnam
are much cheaper than in other countries which are main greyhound
exporters in the world market now such as Australia or Taiwan
Please contact the Peoples Committee below, faxing/phoning is
much more effective, and ask them to withdraw INDO CHINA RACING
AND ENTERTAINMENT's 30 year license for the development of greyhound
racing in Cambodia. Racing facilities have been cited in Phom
Phenn. This will be catastrophic for the greyhounds if it goes
ahead.
Please
remember greyhound racing in Asia is greatly dependant on the
tourist trade to keep going. Please let the tourist offices in
your areas know what you think about greyhound racing in Vietnam.
Urge them to contact the Ba Ria Vung Tau Tourist Corporation (details
below) asking them to stop greyhound racing in Vietnam as it will
no doubt effect the tourist trade. You may like to use the letter
below as a model.

letter for Vietnam
Dear Sir
I
am writing to you regarding greyhound racing in Vietnam. I am
aware that greyhounds that are surplus to requirements are being
slaughtered. Abusing animals in the name of entertainment and
then killing them for human consumption is NOT a tourist attraction
and it will inevitably have a negative effect on your tourist
trade.
The greyhound racing industry has been in decline for many years
especially in the USA where the industry has had massive financial
losses. This is for several reasons, the first being that it has
been recognised as a cruel sport and banned in many states in
the USA and even more recently it has been abolished in South
Africa.
The second reason is that by far more profitable ventures such
as lotteries and casinos have increased in popularity and attracted
the public and the tourist trade. The third reason is that greyhound
racing attracts and is associated with illegal activities such
as the criminal underworld and the use of illegal drugs as recently
exposed in a documentary by the BBC.
I
urge you to reconsider and keep greyhound racing out of Vietnam
and Cambodia. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours
sincerely
