"Twiggy", a 2 yr old greyhound bitch, rescued in January by a Greyhound Action supporter from Barry Wilkinson, a trainer in Taunton.

Over 30 dogs in total were rescued from Wilkinson's kennels. These were mostly greyhounds, but also included his German shepherd guard dog. All were malnourished and infested with fleas and lice.

Twiggy also had a tail injury with exposed vertebrae. She was taken to a vet and had to have several inches removed from her tail.

This is Minnie, an 11 year old female greyhound, in the terrible conditions she was being kept in at Barry Wilkinson's kennels.

The photo was taken shortly before she was rescued, to see the full size version, click on the photo.

Twiggy, Minnie and all the other rescued dogs are now in good homes and have put on weight.

Six dogs had died from malnutrition at Wilkinson's kennels during the previous 18 months.

Thankfully, Wilkinson, who raced dogs at Newton Abbot and Glastonbury (now closed) has been evicted from his kennels, because of his illtreatment of the dogs, and the buildings have been pulled down.

HELP US TO KEEP GOING!

We make no charge for our campaign materials,as we don’t want to discourage anyone from spreading the message by making them pay for leaflets, posters etc.

As our success increases and the number of leafletters and local groups soars (increasing the amount we are spending on printing, postage and so on) so does the pressure on our finances which are constantly stretched to the limit. This means we are always desperately in need of funds to support, increase and expand our work.

Click on the picture below to read our new appeal leaflet telling you many ways you can help to keep our success going and growing.

You can help us enormously
by making a donation.

(Please note: We are a voluntary group, so all money received goes directly towards the campaign and is not spent on wages or expenses.)

::JOIN OUR CAMPAIGN::

..by doing whatever you can to educate the public not to support greyhound racing. This can be done through street stalls, writing letters to newspapers and doing interviews in the local media.

Nottingham Anti Animal Racing Society (NAARS) sent us the following tip - we agree totally with what they say.
Please don't hesitate to contact us for leaflets, which are available free of charge ... click here for more info about free leaflets.

"One of the most effective ways of promoting awareness about the inherent cruelty of greyhound racing NAARS has found, is to leave anti-dog racing literature in public places (eg. libraries, dentist surgeries, notice boards etc). Many people who have come up to our stall in Nottingham have commented how they read a leaflet they found in a public place. This is a legal and highly effective way to raise awareness, especially for those people who do not want to picket greyhound stadiums or betting shops or any other similiar events. We had been told by several gamblers that this method stopped them from every wanting to bet on the dogs again, which is good news all round - both for the gambling public (because let's be honest, we all know many greyhound races are fixed) and for the greyhounds themselves."

We are also looking for volunteers to do research for us on the internet and elsewhere. If you feel you can help in this way, please let us know.

::LOCAL GROUPS::

Increased support has allowed us to set up local Greyhound Action groups in many different parts of the country. Please let us know if you would be interested in taking part in such a group to campaign against your local greyhound stadium and/or help educate people in your area.

Click here to see if there is a local GA group in your area and if not why not start one? We can provide you with all the support and practical advice you will need.

Demonstrations can be held outside greyhound tracks and leaflets distributed to those attending greyhound races and betting shops.

If you would like to do any of the above, please contact us and we will send you whatever information and campaign materials you require.

::PERSUADE PEOPLE NOT TO GO TO THE GREYHOUND TRACK::

Below is an example of many letters and messages we have received from people who have successfully persuaded work colleagues etc. not to attend greyhound racing.

We cannot over-emphasise the importance of this. In order to keep going, the greyhound racing industry is increasingly relying on revenue from ordinary people who go to the races as part of works outings etc. If we can persuade them to go somewhere else instead, this will seriously damage the industry and tracks will start to close.

"I telephoned you last year to ask for some leaflets which you duly sent, because my work was organising a Christmas meal at the Greyhound Stadium in Perry Barr. Thanks to your leaflets + me making a 'song + a dance' about it IT WAS CANCELLED! RESULT! A couple of people refused to read the leaflets (much like a smoker won't read Government Health Warrnings - eh?!) but the majority did + dropped out. Then a programme was aired - and that was the 'nail in the coffin' because it showed graphic scenes of buried dogs.* The next day a colleague who insisted she liked going and it was 'harmless' to the dogs, told me she would never, ever go again! Finally, I still have a few leaflets left + I will be sending them out to all the companies that I pay my bills to (Gas, Electric, Credit Card etc etc) because they too, just like my workplace, may be looking to go and have a 'good night out at the dogs....'
