We have received the following request from Animal Freedom Korea to help stop the legalization of greyhound racing in Korea. Please send emails (address below) to the Minister at MAF and let them know that you fully support their draft to ban dog racing in Korea.

AFK and four other animal groups who are the members of Committee for Propelling Amendment for Animal Protection Law (VOICE4animals, KAAP, CAREKorea, KAPCA) have been trying to make Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) ban dog racing in their new draft for the amendment of the Animal Protection Law. As a result MAF officially announced on October 6, 2004, that they would include dog racing in their new draft for the amendment of Animal Protection Law.

Although MAF is making an attempt to specify dog racing as cruelty to animals in their draft and it was explained in the press release and the package measures they have announced two days ago, the new amendment won’t be finalized until the bill passes the National Assembly.

Those who are waiting for the legalization of dog racing and who are in the greyhound racing industry are strongly protesting against MAF at the moment. AFK will have to help MAF stick to the present draft and is trying to get major local NGOs (non animal groups) to send statements supporting the draft banning dog racing to MAF.

In the mean time AFK continues its effort to make the general public understand why dog racing is bad and what harms it does to dogs.
Even though the bill passes the National Assembly, there’s still a room for ‘dog racing’ to be legalized in a way of using ‘exceptional rules’. (Legislation of dog racing is in charge of Livestock Policies Department in MAF.)

AFK and other animal protection groups will have to watch closely over any movement or attempt to legalize dog racing even after this bill passes.
