GA
is not a rich charity like LACS or RSPCA, it is simply a collection
of individuals who care about greyhounds and have come together in order
to work to end their suffering and exploitation. In the relatively short
time GA has existed as a grassroots organisation based on people power,
we have been extraordinarily successful, winning several campaigns against
new tracks, forming local groups, persuading firms not to take outings
to dogtracks, researching the industry and producing free leaflets,
posters and stickers. All the time spreading information and challenging
the false image that greyhound racing is a caring industry that is just
a bit of fun.
Everyday
the number of our supporters grows at an amazing rate, but we need to
convert passive support into positive action that will help greyhounds.
This is where you come in, whether you support the events listed below,
join (or start) a local group, act on our various email alerts or take
your own independent action such as distributing leaflets in your local
area ... please do something ... together we are a force to be reckoned
with and we wont stop until greyhound racing is condemned to the dustbin
of history.

Newcastle
Animal Rights (NAR)
(updated 22/01/10)
CAMPAIGN
LAUNCHED TO CLOSE NEWCASTLE DOG TRACK
If you live in the North-East, please try to help
Local
animal protection campaigners in Newcastle-upon-Tyne have launched
a campaign to close the
city's greyhound stadium and hope to start holding regular demonstrations
and leafletting sessions
soon.
There
have been occasional demos outside the William Hill owned stadium
in the past (see
http://tinyurl.com/NewcastleStadiumDemo),
but Newcastle Animal Rights (NAR) want to hold these on a
regular basis in order to reduce attendances at the track and
drive it towards eventual closure.
The
existence of Newcastle dog track is responsible for the slaughter
of about 500 greyhounds every
year, so please do your best to support this important campaign,
especially if you live in or near
the Tyneside area.
If
you are able to help, by attending demos etc., even if only occasionally,
please contact NAR at
newcastleAR@hushmail.com
or on 07767 683826.

OXFORD:
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CAMPAIGN TO CLOSE DOG TRACK
We
are trying to get together a group of supporters to hold demonstrations
and distribute leaflets
on a regular basis outside Oxford Greyhound Stadium, with the
aim of eventually forcing the track to
close, by persuading members of the public not to attend races
there.
As
many as 15,000 greyhounds are put to death every year because
of the existence of the British dog
racing industry, so as one of Britain's 27 major greyhound tracks,
Oxford is responsible for the
deaths of about 500 greyhounds annually.
In
addition, thousands of injuries are caused to dogs running on
the tracks, many of them serious.
Just the Saturday before last, a 2 year old greyhound called Rookies
Fantasy was "put down"
following a serious leg injury at the Oxford track.
The
greyhound racing industry relies on 60% of people attending races
for the first time going back
again at some time in the future, so educating punters about the
plight of the dogs is a vitally
important activity.
At
other tracks where frequent leafletting/demos have taken place,
there has been a significant
reduction in attendances and some have closed, including nearby
Reading, which ended dog racing last
year (see http://tinyurl.com/ReadingDemo
for pic of one of the demos there).
Like
many other tracks, Oxford was forced to put a stop to its Tuesday
night meetings earlier this
year, owing to poor attendances, and no longer gets additional
revenue from speedway racing, which
ended there in 2007.
So,
with the track already in difficulties, now is the time to increase
the pressure for its
closure.
If
you live in or near the Oxford area and would like take part in
the cvampaign, please contact us
as soon as possible at info@greyhoundaction.org.uk
or on 01562 700 043.
We
are not asking you to commit to leafletting/demos there every
week. The idea is to set up a
reasonably sized group, so that this can be done on a rota system.
If
you don't live anywhere near Oxford, but would like to help organise/take
part in regular demos
and leafletting outside your local greyhound stadium, please get
in touch with us for advice and
information.
If
you are not able to take part in these activities, you can still
help a great deal by making a
donation to support this national public education campaign, which
can only be kept going through
the generosity of those supporters who provide us with funds to
cover the high cost of printing and
distributing large amounts of leaflets, as well as the production
of good quality posters and
banners for local campaigners. See www.greyhoundaction.org.uk/donations.html
for more info
(including donations on-line).
Please
feel free to forward/crosspost/circulate this message.

CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED FOLLOWING CRUELTY REVELATIONS
Greyhounds put to death. Kept in appalling conditions.
POOLE DOG TRACK DEMO
Tuesday, July 7th, 6pm - 7.30pm
Local
Greyhound Action supporters will be staging their first demo outside
Poole Stadium on Tuesday,
July 7th, to coincide with a dog race meeting taking place there.
The
demo forms part of a recently launched campaign by our newly-formed
Dorset branch to end
greyhound racing at the stadium.
Please
try to attend, especially if you live in or near the Dorset area.
Address
of the stadium is Wimborne Road, Poole, Dorset, BH15 2BP and a
map can be found at
http://tinyurl.com/Poole-Stadium
Please

would like to help with future
demos, street stalls, leafletting etc.
For
contact details and more info on the campaign, see
http://www.greyhoundaction.org.uk/GADorset.htm
Click
here for background info on the revelations about Eve Blanchard
In
the light of the appalling revelations, regarding Eve Blanchard,
a trainer who races greyhounds
at Poole, we are launching a new branch in Dorset, which will
be campaigning to close the dog track
at Poole Stadium.
There
are, very sadly, many trainers like Blanchard, and the only way
to permanently put them out of
business is to shut the dog tracks down.
Dorset
Greyhound Action, which intends to hold regular demos/leafletting
outside the track, as well
as info stalls in towns and cities in the surrounding area, can
be contacted at
dorset.greyhoundaction@yahoo.co.uk
or on 07952 115771.
If
you live in or near the Dorset area, please contact them and get
involved in this important
campaign.

CAMPAIGN
LAUNCHED TO END GREYHOUND RACING IN NOTTINGHAM
Track claims another victim as dog collapses and
dies after race
Local
animal protection workers in Nottingham have launched a campaign
to close the city's
greyhound track and are currently staging demos there on a two-weekly
basis.
The
group are appealing for more support, so they can increase the
frequency of these, as well as
holding street stalls etc. in support of their campaign.
If
you live in or near the East Midlands area and would like to help,
please e-mail
livewire1212@hotmail.com
or call Martin on 07908 320418.
Photos
from recent demos at the track can be seen at http://tinyurl.com/NottmDemosSpring09
According
to the pro-racing greyhoundscene internet forum, a young greyhound
(21 months old), called
Unleash Castro, collapsed and died after winning a race last Saturday
(April 11th) at Nottingham.
Sadly,
deaths and serious injuries to dogs running on the tracks are
relatively common, and the
existence of a major track like Nottingham is responsible for
the putting to death of about 500
greyhounds every year.

Clydebank - in the shopping centre and at the local rugby club.
They
also had a display for two weeks at Clydebank Central Library
(using posters downloaded from
www.greyhoundaction.org.uk/CAGELibrary.htm
), which is now being rolled out over the other libraries
in Clydebank and Dumbarton.

The
following press release has been issued by 1World Scotland about
the demonstration:
Press
Release
Animal
organisations call for end to greyhound racing
Greyhound
Action Scotland have organised an event at Shawfield Stadium,
Rutherglen on 20th September
to highlight conditions within the greyhound racing industry.
Greyhound
racing is widely seen as innocent entertainment, but investigations
into the sport have
uncovered evidence of cruelty, neglect and widespread slaughter
of dogs involved.
1World
Scotland Convenor John Patrick, himself a Rutherglen resident
stated 'We fully support
Greyhound Action Scotland's campaign. With thousands of healthy
dogs being killed each year because
they don't make the grade and the horrific injuries sustained
during events greyhound racing in
Scotland is a major animal welfare issue which is consistently
being ignored. We've been shown
evidence of dogs being killed by methods such as hammer blows
and injection with chemicals like
bleach, some of the dogs found dead or abandoned each year have
been traced back to Shawfield
through their tattoos. The bottom line with some trainers is
that if the dogs aren't going to make
them money then they're surplus to requirements.'
He
added 'Glasgow City Council have supported Shawfield in the
past claiming the venue and the sport
to be of cultural and historic significance to the city. We
say that if Glasgow residents were aware
of the real picture they would disagree. With the scant affordable
recreational and sporting
facilities in Rutherglen especially for youngsters I'm sure
the powers that be could encourage a
better and more positive use for the stadium.'

The
sad saga of greyhounds seriously injured and put to death at Peterborough
Stadium continued on
March 19th, when a 2 year old dog called Killough Boss, was "put
down" after breaking a hock when he
collided with another greyhound during a race.
See http://tinyurl.com/PeterboroughLeaflet
for more info about serious injury and slaughter of dogs
racing at Peterborough.
Yet
more problems for dog track there
Now is the time to support campaign to close it
Dog
racing at the stadium is continuing to experience severe financial
problems, so there is no time
like the present to incease the pressure for it to be brought
to an end.
A
recent local BBC TV report "Greyhound racing hit by recession"
can be seen at
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8148079.stm
"Trading
difficulties" (i.e. poor attendances) have forced the stadium's
management to drastically
cut the amount of trainers permitted to run dogs there, meaning
that, from June 1st, the number of
dogs racing at Peterborough has been reduced by 30% from 512 to
350.
The
decision is a good one for greyhounds, as it means less demand
for these dogs to be bred for the
racing industry, and fewer will suffer and die as a consequence.
Low
attendances led to the stadium making its racing manager redundant
and dropping its Tuesday race
night at the beginning of the year, meaning that races now only
take place on Wednesdays, Fridays
and Saturdays.

at www.dogmagazine.net/archives/1086/shock-and-outrage-as-dog-fatally-injured-live-on-tv

is an article about a recent fatal injury to a greyhound
at the track.
BACKGROUND: 21/11/08
45
greyhounds killed and sent to university for "research"
Just last Thursday - another dog seriously injured and
"put down" at track
Under
the Freedom of Information Act, greyhound protection
campaigners have obtained details of
dozens of greyhounds that have been put to death, sometimes
after serious injury, at Manchester's
Belle Vue Stadium, within the past 15 months.
The
information was obtained from Liverpool University,
after the Sunday Times exposed a greyhound
breeder selling the bodies of pups that wouldnt
chase, or were too slow, to the university for
research and dissection (see http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime/article3908388.ece)
It
reveals that, within a 13 month period, the university
also received the corpses of 45 greyhounds
that had been "put down" at Belle Vue Stadium,
following injury or at the racing owner's request.
In
September 2006, the Sunday Times published an article
about dogs from Belle Vue and other tracks
being put to death at a so-called "animal sanctuary"
at Leigh, just 15 miles from Manchester (see
www.greyhoundgap.org.uk/newsdetail.php?ne_id=4
for text of article).
At
www.dogmagazine.net/archives/1086/shock-and-outrage-as-dog-fatally-injured-live-on-tv
there
is an article about a recent fatal injury to a greyhound
at the track.
And,
within the past few days, we have received information
about another dog, called Emerson
Catkin, who was "put down" after she was seriously
injured in a race at Belle Vue last Thursday.

Worcestershire
Action for Greyhounds
(WAG)
events 2008 |
Below are the fundraising events we have lined up for this year.
We are extremely grateful for any time you are able to spare to
rattle a tin for us, but where there is *** beside an event, it's
not a rude word, it just refers to the fact that we have managed
to secure a particularly large and fertile area where we can spread
ourselves out, so we need as many collectors as possible. If you
can only make it once or twice a year and are wondering which event
to choose, those are the ones where we can and would like to flood
every conceivable nook and cranny of a town centre. However, the
principle consideration should still be what is convenient and feasible
for you, and for that reason we have never had a 'rota' system,
on the basis that people come at whatever time is suitable for them.
Please
also bring with you your most effective Weapon of Mass Seduction
- your dog. Cute you may be, but whatever admiring glances follow
your insouciant steps, and regardless of what your girlfriend
thinks, you won't, believe me, cut it anything like as well as
Fido with Mr and Mrs General Public. Your dog does not have to
be a greyhound although it helps people see, should they be in
any doubt, exactly what we are collecting for. Nonetheless, without
making any effort whatsoever, dogs of all breeds invariably attract
a besotted audience and have a markedly positive effect on takings.
Having
said that, dogs should ideally be reasonably confident and have
stable temperaments. Most dogs either use it as an opportunity
to catch up on some shut-eye, or revel in all the attention they
attract. Street collections have helped some of our originally
more nervous canine collectors develop confidence, but please
be careful not to allow your dog to become overwhelmed, as this
can have the opposite effect. Children in particular can be quite
rough in their attentions, so don't be afraid to suggest politely
but firmly that it isn't such a good idea for them to pull your
dog's tail/tweak his ears etc, and always take your dog away as
soon as you notice that he's/she's had enough. He/she will appreciate
a duvet/bed he can lie down on and a supply of water, particularly
in hot weather, and a coat in cold weather. And at the risk of
sounding like your mother, please take sure you wrap up warm yourself
when the temperature starts to drop. You can quickly start to
feel the cold when you are simply standing for long periods.
We
look forward to welcoming you to some of the following events.
Please note that, if you cannot locate me, my mobile number is
0799 089 0779 and you can always ring me on this and ask me where
I am! I never slop off to the pub, I promise.
Saturday,
January 19 Mell Square, Solihull. Plenty of carparks around Mell
Square which are well signposted. I will probably be hovering outside
the front of Boots. *** Saturday,
February 16 Sainsbury's supermarket in Redditch, outside main
entrance. Parking in the supermarket car park is free. (Please
let me know beforehand if you intend to come to this, as this
is the one event per year when we may well need to create a rota,
as there are effectively only two positions, the entrance and
the exit).
Saturday,
February 23 Shirley, Solihull. I shall probably be outside Boots.
Best place to park is in Shirley Shoppers, a free car park which
is behind Iceland. You come out of the exit to Shirley Shoppers
onto the High Street and will practically stumble upon me. ***
Saturday,
March 22 Leamington Spa. Usually outside Mark & Spencers or
Boots on the other side of the road. Plenty of parking in the
town. ***
Saturday,
April 5th Coventry - waiting for confirmation of the exact date.
***
Saturday, May 3rd Rugby town centre. There is a shopping centre
next to the clock tower (called, we think, Clock Towers Shopping
Centre) which we will most likely be outside. Otherwise on other
side of the market between Boots the opticians and Monsoon.
Saturday,
June 21 Knowle, Solihull. You'll find me outside Tesco's. There
is short and long term parking close to Tesco's and you can often
park on the road slightly further back from the official car parks.
Saturday,
July 19 Warwick. I tend to be outside Boots in Swan Street off
the market square if not outside the building society on the market
square itself. There is a council car park in Cape Road behind
the Police Station and Cape Road Medical Centre which is free
at weekends.
Saturday,
August 2 Mell Square, Solihull. Plenty of carparks around Mell
Square which are well signposted. I will probably be hovering
outside the front of Boots. ***
Saturday,August
23 Kenilworth town centre, outside Woolworths. There is a large
car park accessible from the High Street.
Saturday,
September 13 Alcester, Warks. There is a supermarket off School
Lane which has free parking. I will be on the High Street, which
is not particularly long.
Saturday, October 18 Bromsgrove. I shall be beside the Hausmann
statue in the pedestrian precinct. Best places to park are in
Asda - (time limit of 2 hours and paying) - or, if you carry on
up the same road as the entrance to Asda's carpark and instead
of turning left into Asda turn right about 20 yards further up
into a non-paying car park where there is no time limit. ***
November,
Nuneaton. This is a new one for us. Date to be confirmed. I'll
be by the fountain.
Saturday,
December 8 Knowle, Solihull. You'll find me outside Tesco's. There
is short and long term parking close to Tesco's and you can often
park on the road slightly further back from the official car parks.

Demonstrations/leafletting already takes place at several of the
30 major British dog tracks on a regular basis and our ultimate
aim is to have a presence outside all of them at least once a week.
This has proved to be an extremely effective method of campaigning,
which has led to a substantial reduction in attendances at greyhound
stadiums where frequent demos take place, pushing those dog tracks
ever nearer to their ultimate closure.
If you are not able to take part in demonstrations, please consider
sending us a donation to support this national public education
campaign, which can only be kept going through the generosity of
those supporters who provide us with funds to cover the high cost
of producing and distributing large amounts of leaflets and posters.

Help stop the
Mayor of Merton going to the dogs
The Mayor of Merton, Councillor Martin
Whelton,
is holding a charity race night at Wimbledon Stadium
on Friday October 10th.
Please
contact Cllr Whelton, explaining to him, politely, the
suffering and slaughter of dogs caused
by the greyhound racing industry and asking him to please
cancel the event and never to organise a
night at the dogs again.
There
are plenty of other ways of raising funds for charity
without this involving support for an
industry that is responsible for the putting to death
of many thousands of greyhounds every year
(for more info on this, see our updated "Race for
Life" leaflet at http://tinyurl.com/raceforlife).
Cllr
Martin Whelton can be contacted at mayor@merton.gov.uk
and martin.whelton@merton.gov.uk
It would also be worth sending messages to the Mayor's
attendant, Carl Brown, at
carl.brown@merton.gov.uk
and the Mayor's Personal Executive Assistant, Hilary Gullen,
at
hilary.gullen@merton.gov.uk
Telephone no. for the Mayor's Office is 020 8545 3517
and the fax is 0208 545 3242.
If
you have time, please contact all the Merton Borough councillors
( see
http://www.merton.gov.uk/council/councillors.htm?view=allmembers
) urging them to ask the Mayor to
please cancel his night at the dogs.
Greyhound Crusaders are now also asking you to please
write politely to educate the organisations that will
be benefiting from the 'night at the dogs' fundraiser
as we have recently been informed that these two groups
will receive funds raised from the 'night at the dogs',

Romford
& Crayford
Campaigns
planned to end greyhound racing
Once
upon a time there were over 30 greyhound tracks in the
London area, but, following the closure
of Walthamstow Stadium, there are now only three.
A
campaign already exist to end greyhound racing at Wimbledon
(see below) and we are now very keen
to set up local groups to carry out regular leafletting/demos
outside the two other Greater London
tracks at Romford and Crayford.
So
if you live in or near the East London/West Essex or South
East London/West Kent areas and could
help campaign for the closure of either of these tracks,
please contact Greyhound Action at
info@greyhoundaction.org.uk
or on 01562 700 043 for more advice and information.
Walthamstow
Let's
make sure the track stays shut!
Greyhound
racing came to an end at Walthamstow on August 16th, after
the stadium was sold to London
& Quadrant for the purposes of housebuilding.
However,
a pro greyhound racing consortium is now attempting to
purchase the stadium from L & Q in
order to reinstate the dog racing.
We
need to do everything we can to stop this from happening.
Please see http://www.greyhoundaction.org.uk/walthamstowThreat.htm
for details of how you can help.
In
addition to the info given at the above webpage, if you
have time, please contact all the Waltham
Forest councillors (See http://tinyurl.com/walthamforestcouncillors),
politely urging them to do all
they can to prevent greyhound racing returning to Walthamstow
Stadium.
It
would also be helpful if people could contact the Mayor
of London (Boris Johnson), asking if he
could also do all he can to stop dog racing returning
to Walthamstow. Contact details are at

DERBY DEMOS/LEAFLETTING
Extra help needed at Wimbledon
Appeal for more volunteers for May 23rd & 30th
The
race meeting at Wimbledon Stadium on Saturday May 30th
includes the Final of the Greyhound

please do your best to attend, especially if
you live in or near the area.
There
will be a demo outside the main gate of the stadium from
5.15pm until 8pm and then leafletting
from 10pm until 11.30pm to catch the punters coming out.
If
you can help at either, or both, of these, please contact
Simon on 07847 479961.
Extra
help is also needed with leafletting on Saturday 23rd,
when the semi-finals of the event are
taking place. Once again, please call Simon, if you can
help.

VICTORY
... TRACK NOW CLOSED DUE TO OUR CAMPAIGN !!!
LOOKS
LIKE IT'S CURTAINS FOR COV!
Five year campaign brings end to dog racing at Brandon
Stadium
According
to a report in the Coventry Telegraph, the city's
greyhound stadium, situated in the nearby village
of Brandon, "looks to have run its last race"
... see
http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/coventry-warwickshire-sport/other-sport/2009/12/29/coventry-s-dog-racing-stadium-looks-to-have-run-last-race-92746-25483862
This
excellent news is a wonderful victory for Coventry
Against Greyhound Exploitation (CAGE), who
launched an intensive campaign to close the stadium's
dog track after it reopened in April 2004
Since
that time CAGE have held hundreds of demos and leafletting
sessions (averaging at least one a
week) outside the stadium, to educate punters about
the plight of the greyhounds and urge them never
to go to dog racing again.
Their
valiant efforts helped reduce attendances at the
Coventry track to such an extent that it
began to suffer big financial losses and has now
been forced to close.
The
closure of the track is excellent news for greyhounds,
as we estimate that its existence was
responsible for the putting to death of about 500
of these dogs every year.
This
is the second big success for CAGE, who succesfully
fought plans to construct another Coventry
greyhound track in 2002.
The
ending of greyhound racing at Brandon means that
only three dog tracks now exist in the West
Midlands area - Hall Green and Perry Barr in Birmingham
and Monmore Green in Wolverhampton. To get
involved in the campaigns to close them contact
Greyhound Action at info@greyhoundaction.org.uk
or
on 01562 700 043.

COVENTRY STADIUM - TIME CHANGE FOR SUNDAY DEMOS
(see new times above)
Track's attempt to attract children an almighty
flop
Sunday
greyhound racing at Coventry Stadium has now been
switched from the evening to the early afternoon,
so Coventry Against Greyhound Exploitation (CAGE)
have changed the times of their demos outside the
stadium accordingly.
Do
try to get along to some of these demos, especially
if you live in or near the West Midlands/Warwickshire
area.
An
attempt by Coventry Stadium owner Avtar Sandhu to
shore up appalling attendances by attracting children
to greyhound racing with a "family fun day"
at the track last Sunday, turned into an almighty
flop. CAGE demonstrators counted little more than
a dozen children entering the stadium with their
parents (photos from the demo can be seen at http://tinyurl.com/5obj4b
) and a visibly upset Sandhu was told his fortune
in no uncertain terms after emerging to argue with
protesters.
This
was despite the stadium having sent flyers about
the event to more than 30 local schools, causing
much controversy in the process

Original
15th June NEWSFLASH
Hello
everyone!!!
Just letting you know some of the latest news from
the Coventry greyhound stadium.
The track has not been going very well financially
due mainly to the low attendances and some financial
irregularities. The attendances at the track
are consistently very low and we feel our weekly picket
is working. The company headed by Malcolm Francis
went into liquidation about 3 months ago leaving a
huge amount of debt. Since then a new company headed
by Avtar Sandhu has been set up and some of the debt
has been paid off. Now they are trying to revamp the
whole enterprise. They have a new webpage:
http://www.coventrygreyhounds.com/index.php
Part of their promotions are aimed at families offering
to children free meals, cheap entrance rates and special
offer packs.
We plan to picket the launch day for these family
promotions on Sunday 20th July from 11am to 12:15pm.
It is strategically important to keep our presence
at the gates to let know these first time punters
about the hidden cruelty of the greyhound racing industry.
and now they are actually targeting children
in their advertising!! We
have decided that to picket every racing meeting
since their launch day on the 20th July for 2 weeks.
After that we will re-asses the impact both of their
advertising campaign and our raising awareness campaign. |

Greyhound
Remembrance Weekend July
25 & 26th 2009 |
|
In
memory of all the dogs that have suffered and died because of
the racing industry
Please try to take part in this important event
Greyhound
racing in the UK began on July 24th 1926 at Belle Vue Stadium
in Manchester.
Every
year, on the nearest Saturday and Sunday to this date, we stage
Greyhound Remembrance Weekend,
in memory of the hundreds of thousands of dogs that have been
abused and killed by the greyhound
racing industry since that day.
The
Weekend is marked by street stalls and demos/pickets on the Saturday
and by remembrance
ceremonies on the Sunday, when wreaths and flowers are laid outside
greyhound stadiums, in memory of
all the dogs that have suffered and been put to death.
Please
let us know, as soon as possible, if you'd like to organise, or
take part in, a Greyhound
Remembrance Weekend event in your local area.
Call 01562 700 043 or e-mail info@greyhoundaction.org.uk
We
can supply leaflets, petition forms, posters etc., including two
A3 size posters that we are
producing specially for the Weekend. Images of these can be seen
at http://tinyurl.com/GRW-Poster-01
and http://tinyurl.com/GRW-Poster-02
and we would suggest they be displayed side by side.
It
would also help greatly if all our supporters/sympathisers could
write letters to their local
papers about Greyhound Remembrance Weekend. Below is a sample
letter you can send, or if you so
wish, you can compose your own.
SAMPLE
LETTER RE GREYHOUND REMEMBRANCE WEEKEND
July
25th - 26th is Greyhound Remembrance Weekend, when events are
held across the UK in memory of
the hundreds of thousands of greyhounds that have suffered and
been put to death in the 83 years
since commercial greyhound racing began in this country on July
24th, 1926.
According
to international greyhound protection organisation Greyhound Action,
as many as 15,000
greyhounds are still being "put down" every year, after
failing to make the grade as racers or when
their "careers" on the tracks come to an end.
An
RSPCA report has stated that "at least 20 greyhounds a day
- either puppies which do not make the
track, or 'retired' dogs aged three or four - simply 'disappear',
presumed killed".
In
addition, hundreds of greyhounds sustain serious, sometimes fatal,
injuries whilst racing.
Members
of the public can help put an end to this horrific situation by
not attending dog tracks or
betting on greyhound racing, so this appalling industry fades
away through lack of financial
support.

and to concentrate on virtual (computerised) racing instead.
Our last co-ordinated William Hill Day of Action, on July
2nd 2007, was extremely successful, with many thousands
of our "William Kill" leaflets distributed and
a large number of people signing a pledge to boycott William
Hill until they disengage from commercial greyhound racing.
Please help to make the next one even better.
If you would like to take part in future events, please
contact Greyhound Action as soon as possible. Leaflets,
posters and pledge forms are all available free of charge.
We can also provide advice on obtaining the maximum publicity
for your event, in order to educate as many people as
possible about the appalling slaughter and suffering of
greyhounds and William Hills responsibility for
so much of it.

until our next co-ordinated day of action ... hold one

| An
effective way to promote greyhound awareness - that you can do
any day |
|
We've received the message below from the Nottingham Anti Animal
Racing Society ( NAARS
) and agree totally with what they say. This does not take much
effort and can be done anyday. Please don't hesitate to contact
us for leaflets, which are available free of charge.
"One
of the most effective ways of promoting awareness about the inherent
cruelty of greyhound racing NAARS has found, is to leave anti-dog
racing literature in public places (eg. libraries, dentist surgeries,
notice boards etc). Many people who have come up to our stall
in Nottingham have commented how they read a leaflet they found
in a public place. This is a legal and highly effective way to
raise awareness, especially for those people who do not want to
picket greyhound stadiums or betting shops or any other similiar
events. We had been told by several gamblers that this method
stopped them from every wanting to bet on the dogs again, which
is good news all round - both for the gambling public (because
let's be honest, we all know many greyhound races are fixed) and
for the greyhounds themselves."

Remembering
Rusty Weekend ... May 1st and 3nd 2010 ... Street stalls, demos,
other events nationwide |
|

Rusty
... another victim of greyhound racing
|
Rusty's
murderer ... convicted animal abuser Andrew Gough |
On
Sunday, May 2nd 2004, a black male greyhound (later found to have
been called Rusty) was
discovered by a dog walker, who heard him whimpering in agony
in a rubbish tip on Fochriw Mountain
in the Rhymney Valley, South Wales.
Rusty
had been injured in several ways, including being shot in the
head with a captive-bolt pistol,
and his ears had been hacked off (presumably, because they contained
tattoos that could identify
him).
Despite
this appalling torture, Rusty was still alive - and wagging his
tail - but his injuries were
so extensive that he was later "put to sleep" by a vet.
Later
that year, at Caerphilly Magistrates Court, greyhound "executioner"
Andrew Gough was sentenced
to 6 months imprisonment for torturing Rusty and banned from keeping
animals for life.
It
is almost six years since poor Rusty was mutilated and left to
die, because he was no longer fit
to race. On the first weekend of May, we will be remembering him,
and all the other dogs that have
suffered and died at the evil hands of the greyhound racing industry.
It
emerged during Gough's trial that Rusty's "owner" and
trainer had handed him over to Gough to
kill, after a toe injury had ended the greyhound's racing career.
On
May 1st & 2nd, to mark the sixth anniversary of his suffering
and death, we will be holding
Remembering Rusty Weekend, in memory of Rusty and of all the other
dogs who have suffered and died
at the hands of the greyhound racing industry.
Greyhound
Action supporters throughout the country will be organising/taking
part in street stalls,
demos outside greyhound tracks etc. to mark Remembering Rusty
Weekend by persuading the public to
boycott greyhound racing.
If
you're interested in organising/taking part in an event in your
local area for Remembering Rusty
Weekend, please contact Greyhound Action as soon as possible at
info@greyhoundaction.org.uk
or on
01562 700 043, so we can send you leaflets, posters and other
campaign materials and give you any
advice you may need.
See
www.greyhoundaction.org.uk/justiceForRusty.htm
for more info about the Rusty case and previous
events in his memory.
It
would also help greatly if all of our supporters/sympathisers
could write letters, as soon as
possible, to their local papers about Remembering Rusty Weekend.
Below is a sample letter you can
send, or if you so wish, you can compose your own.

LETTER RE REMEMBERING RUSTY WEEKEND
May
1st and 2nd is Remembering Rusty Weekend, when events are held
across the UK to draw public
attention to the plight of greyhounds.
May
2nd is the 6th anniversary of the death of a greyhound called
Rusty, who was shot, tortured
and abandoned on a South Wales mountain, after a toe injury put
an end to his racing days.
According
to international greyhound protection organisation Greyhound Action,
more than 12,000
greyhounds, bred for the British racing industry, are "put
down" every year, after failing to make
the grade as racers or when their "careers" on the tracks
come to an end.
An
RSPCA report on greyhound racing has stated that "at least
20 greyhounds a day - either puppies
which do not make the track, or 'retired' dogs aged three or four
- simply 'disappear', presumed

In

due to the dangerous nature of the tracks.
Members
of the public can help put an end to this horrific situation by
not attending dog tracks or

fades away through lack of financial
